The Montini Catholic Broncos hosted the Hyde Park Thunderbirds on Friday, August 24th, in a Week 1 matchup. Before the game, Montini dedicated the Vince Gavin Stadium Club, which had been renovated over the summer by Montini alum John Gavin ’91 in honor of his father Vince, who was an original member of the Montini Catholic Board of Trustees.

Hyde Park won the opening coin toss and elected to defer their option to the second half, so the Broncos started the game on offense. Junior quarterback Deontay Bell engineered a six play, 65 yard drive that ended with a 10-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Zach Olsen. Although the extra point try was no good, on the first play following the ensuing kickoff, an errant snap sailed over the head of Hyde Park quarterback Lawrence Holloway into the end zone. As Holloway tried to run the ball out, he was tackled by Bronco linebacker Jackson Bruscianelli for a safety.

Sophomore Robert Brazziel started the next offensive series at quarterback for the Broncos and led a drive that ended with a 20-yard touchdown run by Nick Fedanzo. After the Bronco defense forced a punt on the next Hyde Park drive, Bell re-entered the game at quarterback and capped a short five-play drive with a ten-yard touchdown pass to CJ Bufkin. After the Bronco defense forced another safety, Fedanzo added another rushing score on the next Montini possession. Montini added on to its lead with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Nick Mudd to Paul Flicek, a one-yard scamper by Brazziel, and capped the scoring with 45-yard run by Bell. The Bronco defense would hold the Thunderbird offense scoreless in the second half to preserve the shutout. Montini limited Hyde Park to just 17 yards of total offense in the contest while recording two safeties, three turnovers, and six sacks. Offensively, Bell finished 5-for-6 for 74 yards and two touchdowns, while Fedanzo added two scores and 75 yards on only five carries.

In lower-level action, the freshman Broncos rallied from an 18-0 deficit to defeat Nazareth 32-30, and the sophomore Broncos defeated Naz 34-12. Montini hosts Christ the King Jesuit College Prep this coming Friday with games scheduled for 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM.
