The Montini Catholic Broncos hosted the Gladiators from Christ the King Jesuit College Prep on Friday, August 31st, in a Week 2 non-conference matchup. For the second week in a row, the Broncos began the game on offense, with junior quarterback Deontay Bell leading a two play, 57 yard drive that ended with a 31-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Zach Olsen. After a failed extra point attempt, the Bronco defense forced their third safety of the season on the ensuing possession as junior defensive tackle Cam Richardson sacked Gladiator quarterback Justin Bailey in the end zone on Christ the King’s second offensive play.
The Broncos only needed one play to find the end zone on the next offensive possession, as senior running back Nick Fedanzo rushed for a 32-yard score. After the defense forced another three-and-out, junior CJ Bufkin capped a short three-play drive with a 23 yard touchdown run. Sophomore quarterback Robert Brazziel would later toss a pair of touchdown passes to senior tight end Frank Conforti and junior receiver Nate Muersch, and a 25 yard touchdown run by junior Johnny Palumbo made the score 42-0 Montini as the teams went to the locker room at halftime. Just as the second half was about to start, a thunderstorm forced the evacuation of the Duffy Memorial Stadium crowd, and the two teams mutually agreed to end the game before play could resume. The Bronco offense racked up 207 total yards in the contest, with Bell finishing a perfect 3-for-3 for 77 yards and Fedanzo leading all rushers with 32 yards and a touchdown. Jackson Bruscianelli paced the Montini defense with eleven total tackles and three sacks, while Conforti and Patrick Peters recorded four total tackles and two sacks each.
In lower-level action, the freshman Broncos defeated Lemont 28-6, and the sophomore team defeated Christ the King 42-0 in a Labor Day match-up. Montini takes on Marmion this weekend with the sophomore game scheduled for 5:00 PM Friday night, with the varsity game to follow at 7:30. The freshman Broncos will travel to Marmion for a 9:30 AM game on Saturday.
