The Montini football team hosted Marmion Academy last Friday night in a Chicago Catholic League crossover game at Duffy Memorial Stadium, looking to avenge the 28-27 loss they suffered at the hands of the Cadets last season. After the Bronco defense forced a Marmion punt on the first drive of the game, quarterback Deontay Bell engineered a 16-play drive that ended with a 2-yard keeper for a 7-0 Montini lead. On the ensuing possession, CJ Bufkin recovered a Marmion fumble, which the Bronco offense promptly turned into 6 points when Robert Brazziel connected with Nate Muersch on a 33-yard scoring pass. The Broncos would tack on another score before halftime as Bell tossed a 4-yard touchdown pass to Muersch, and Montini took a 21-0 lead into the break.

Bell would later find Jermari Harris for a touchdown on the opening drive of the second half to push the lead to 27-0, and Marmion’s only points came on a 27-yard field goal with five minutes to play as the Montini defense harassed the Cadets all night, forcing two fumbles and an interception. DiAndre Harris paced the defense with twelve tackles, while Frank Conforti recorded three sacks on Cadets quarterback Declan McDonald. Offensively, Bell finished 10-for-15 for 88 yards and two scores, while running back Nick Fedanzo recorded 113 yards on the ground.

In lower-level action, the sophomore Broncos weathered a late comeback to defeat Marmion 41-28, while the freshman Broncos suffered a 6-0 loss to the Cadets. Montini returns to action this Friday night at home against St. Joseph, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 PM. This week’s contest will feature a charity fundraiser to benefit the Johnathan Weiger “Johnny Always Wins” Foundation in memory of Johnny Weiger, a Montini student who passed away in 2012 following treatment for leukemia.
