It its final tune-up before starting Catholic League Blue play next weekend, Montini hosts fellow LaSallian school St. Joseph in its annual charity game benefiting the Johnathan Weiger “Johnny Always Wins” Foundation. The story of the season so far has been the Montini defense, which has not allowed an opposing touchdown through three games and has scored more points (6, on three safeties) than it has allowed (3, on a 27-yard field last week against Marmion). Bruscianelli leads the defense with 28 total tackles through three games, while senior defensive back Jermari Harris has recorded two interceptions and a forced fumble. The Bronco defense will look to contain the Chargers’ offense this week; despite being 0-3, St. Joseph has played St. Ignatius and St. Laurence this season, both of which are perennial playoff contenders. Hayden, the starting quarterback, is a true dual-threat, while Burgie is a 4-year varsity starter with plenty of speed. On the offensive side of the ball for Montini, expect Deontay Bell and Robert Brazziel to share time at the quarterback position. Junior receiver Nate Muersch only has six receptions this season, but three of them have been for touchdowns, and he’ll look to add to that total against the Chargers’ defense.
In lower-level action, the sophomore Broncos are off this week, while the freshman team hosts Urban Prep-Bronzeville at 9:30 AM Saturday.
