The Montini football team hosted the Chargers from St. Joseph High School last Friday night in a Chicago Catholic League crossover game at Duffy Memorial Stadium. Before the game, senior Frank Conforti was honored as the recipient of the annual Spirit of 76 Award, given out in memory of Johnny Weiger, a member of the Montini class of 2015 who passed away in 2012 due to complications from leukemia. St. Joseph received the football to start the game, and went on a lengthy drive that consumed over five minutes before the Montini defense forced a stop on a fourth-down. The Bronco offense would only need two plays to score, as senior Ray Wojkovich scored on a eight-yard run. After the defense forced another fourth-down stop, the Broncos scored again as Deontay Bell found Scott West for a 35-yard score. Montini would tack on another score in the first quarter as running back Nick Fedanzo scored on a five-yard run. In the second quarter, Montini would get scores from three different quarterbacks as Bell ran for a three-yard touchdown, while Robert Brazziel and Nick Mudd each threw a touchdown pass to make the score 41-0 Montini at half.
The second half started off with a bang for the Broncos, as Zach Olson returned the second-half kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown. Montini would add one final score midway through the third quarter, as West intercepted a pass from Chargers quarterback Caleb Hayden and returned the ball 25 yards for a touchdown. For the game, Fedanzo rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown on five carries, while West and Nate Muersch each added a receiving score. Defensive ends Demond Butcher and Fred Stokes led the defense with eight total tackles, while Jackson Bruscianelli added 7 and CJ Bufkin, Patrick Peters, and Jermari Harris had six each.
In lower-level action, the freshman Broncos overcame a 12-8 halftime deficit to defeat Urban Prep-Bronzeville 32-12. All three levels return to action this weekend against St. Rita. Friday night is homecoming, with the sophomore game kicking off at 5 PM and the varsity game following at 7:30. The freshman team will travel to St. Rita for a 9:30 AM kickoff on Saturday.
