In the first-ever game for the Montini football program as a member of the Chicago Catholic League Blue, the Broncos hosted the St. Rita of Cascia Mustangs last Friday night for Homecoming. The Bronco offense got the ball first and started the contest with a bang, as quarterback Deontay Bell scored on an 80-yard keeper to make it 6-0 Montini just 12 seconds into the game. On the very next possession, with St. Rita facing 3rd and 9 from their own 26, Jermari Harris intercepted Mustang quarterback Hayden Ekern and scored on a 26-yard pick-six. Neither team would score for the rest of the first quarter, and the second quarter saw three field goals (one by Montini and two by St. Rita) put up on the board to make the halftime score 16-6 in favor of the Broncos.

On the opening possession of the second half, the Mustangs embarked on a 10-play, 64-yard drive that ended with a five-yard scoring run by Ekern, the first touchdown allowed by the Montini defense on the season. Later in the quarter, St. Rita missed a 35-yard field goal that would have knotted the game at 16, and the Montini offense scored on the next possession when Nick Fedanzo found the end zone from 26 yards out. The Broncos would add one more score in the fourth, as Fedanzo busted off a 74-yard run down to the St. Rita four-yard-line, with Bell scoring three plays later. The Bronco offense rolled up 416 total yards, with 315 of them coming on the ground. Fedanzo carried the ball 23 times for 170 yards and a score, while Bell added 119 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Linebacker Jackson Bruscianelli led the Montini defense with 15 total tackles, while DiAndre Harris and CJ Bufkin added 10 each.

In lower-level action, the sophomore Broncos dropped a close contest to St. Rita by a 20-14 final, while the freshman team lost at St. Rita 35-12. All three levels return to action this weekend against Loyola Academy. The sophomores will travel to Wilmette for an 11 AM kickoff on Saturday, with the varsity to follow at 1:30 PM. The freshman game will be held at Montini at 5:30 PM on Friday night.
