After a tough loss to Brother Rice last weekend, Montini stays home and opens up the Class 5A playoffs against a Woodstock North team that needed victories in its final three regular-season games to become playoff eligible. Montini’s offense struggled last week against Brother Rice, as the Illinois-bound Fedanzo was limited to only 22 yards on 15 carries, while Deontay Bell’s 42-yard run in the third quarter represented one-third of the Broncos’ total offensive output of 117 total yards. The Bronco offense will be tested by a Thunder defense that has made some big plays in recent weeks. Zinn had a game-changing interception in week 7 against Woodstock that led to the eventual game-winning score, while linebacker Andrew Pena and defensive lineman Mason Mathews combined on a fumble recovery in the same game that sealed the victory for the Thunder.

Woodstock North, in the playoffs for the third consecutive season, run a balanced triple-option attack that relies heavily on the run game. In last week’s game against Harvard, the Thunder rolled up 319 total yards of offense, all but six of which came via the run game. Flores gets the lion’s share of carries on the ground, while senior receiver Carter Coalson is the leading receiver when the Thunder decided to throw the ball. Defensively, Jackson Bruscianelli led the Broncos last week with sixteen total tackles, including two for a loss, while Trevor Swier had 12 and Jermari Harris recorded ten. Look for the Bronco offense to have a bounce-back effort and for the defense to clamp down on the Thunder rushing attack.
