The Montini football team hosted the Woodstock North Thunder this past Saturday in the first round of the IHSA Class 5A playoffs. The Broncos won the opening coin toss and elected to receive, and the Montini offense promptly turned in a 4-play, 61 yard drive that ended with a 2-yard touchdown run by Nick Fedanzo after just 35 seconds of game time had elapsed. Neither team would score for the remainder of the quarter, as the Thunder offense held possession of the football for most of the period. Woodstock North’s 13-play opening drive stalled at the Broncos’ 26-yard line when a fumbled hand-off was recovered by Montini’s Johnny Palumbo, and following a failed fourth-down conversion attempt by the Montini offense, Jermari Harris picked off Woodstock North quarterback Ryan Zinnen on a fourth-down play. Montini would score three times in the second quarter on a 12-yard touchdown run by Zach Olson, a 28-yard pass from Deontay Bell to Scott West, and a 14-yard pass from Robert Brazziel to Nate Muersch to extend the lead to 28-0 at halftime.

Following a Woodstock North punt on the opening possession of the second half, the Broncos needed just two plays to score, as Fedanzo busted off a 64-yard run to increase the lead to 35-0. Woodstock North responded with a 13-play, 67-yard drive that ended with a 10-yard rushing score by Colin Zinn, but Montini struck back on the ensuing possession with a 53-yard run by Fedanzo for the game’s final score, as both sides were held off the board in the fourth quarter. Offensively, Fedanzo carried the ball 10 times for 168 yards and three scores, while Bell and Brazziel combined to go 11-for-16 for 173 yards and two touchdowns. Montini’s defense limited the Thunder to 226 total yards, all of which came via the run game as Woodstock North finished 0-for-5 through the air. DiAndre Harris led the Broncos with fifteen total tackles, while Fred Stokes added twelve and Mark Gabriel finished with ten.

Montini advances to the second round of the Class 5A playoffs and will host Sycamore this coming weekend. The Spartans defeated the Rochelle Hubs 21-7 in their first-round game this past Friday night in Sycamore. Kick-off at John Duffy Memorial Stadium is scheduled for 2 PM this Saturday.
