The Montini football team traveled to Evergreen Park this past Saturday to take on the host Mustangs in an IHSA Class 5A quarterfinal match-up. The Broncos won the opening coin toss and elected to receive, but the Mustangs recovered a surprise onside kick to open the contest. After Montini’s defense forced a punt on the opening possession, the Broncos struck right away as quarterback Deontay Bell scored on a 59-yard run. Evergreen Park lost a fumble on its next offensive possession, and the Broncos capitalized three plays later when Nick Fedanzo scored form two yards out. On the next possession, Jermari Harris intercepted Mustangs quarterback Devin Turner, and the Broncos found the end zone the very next play on a double pass, as Robert Brazziel lateraled the ball to receiver Nick Wind, who found a wide-open Matt Ross for a 41-yard score. Ross would later haul in a 53-yard pass from Bell to extend the lead to 27-0 before the end of the first quarter.

Montini would score three more times in the second quarter to trigger the running clock, as Fedanzo, CJ Bufkin, and Zach Olson all scored rushing touchdowns. After a scoreless third, both team found the end zone in the fourth quarter. Enzo May scored on a 1-yard run for the Broncos, while Sean Wilkinson connected with Karlton Carpenter on a 53-yard screen pass for the Mustangs’ lone score. For the game, Fedanzo finished with 100 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries, while Ross was the Broncos’ leading receiver with three catches for 98 yards and two scores. Patrick Peters led the Bronco defense with 14 total tackles, including two for a loss, while Fred Stokes added 11 total tackles, four of which went for a loss, and one quarterback sack. The Broncos forced four turnovers, as Trevor Swier, Cam Richardson, and Ray Wojokovich all recovered fumbles to go along with Harris’ interception.

Montini now advances to the Class 5A semifinals against Sterling, who defeated Rockford Boylan 10-7 this past weekend. Kickoff at Roscoe Eades Stadium in Sterling is scheduled for 2 PM on Saturday.
