Last Season: 12-2 (3-1 Chicago Catholic League Blue), lost 35-27 to Joliet Catholic in Class 5A State Championship

Offensive Preview: Following a season in which it amassed 488 points, 4,928 yards of total offense, and 63 combined rushing and passing touchdowns, the Bronco offense welcomes back five offensive starters from the 2018 campaign. Senior quarterback Deontay Bell, who rushed for ten touchdowns and threw for nine more last season, returns, as does senior receiver Nate Muersch, a Miami of Ohio commit. CJ Bufkin, who played a significant role on defense last year, will split time at running back with junior DiAndre Harris to replace the graduated Nick Fedanzo, who is now on the roster at the University of Illinois. Up front, the offensive line returns three starters, led by senior defensive tackle Jeremiah Banks-Wall, who has drawn interest from a large number of colleges.

Defensive Preview: Montini’s defense allowed 163 points last season despite playing one of the toughest schedules in program history. Up front, the defensive line is led by seniors Patrick Peters and Cam Richardson, who combined for 136 tackles and nine sacks last season. Montini’s linebacker corps gets a boost with the return of Brandon Liston, who started as a sophomore but missed all of last season due to injury. He’ll be complemented by Trevor Swier, who recorded 123 total tackles last season. In addition to his duties offensively, Bufkin returns to lead a group of speedy defensive backs that will test opposing quarterbacks.

The Schedule: With the offseason merger between the CCL and the East Suburban Catholic Conference to create a 24 team mega-league, Montini’s schedule will look slightly different than it has in years past. The Broncos now will be a member of the CCL/ESCC Green division, along with St. Rita, Providence, and Niles Notre Dame. Week 1 sees the Broncos driving six and a half hours to Hudson, Wisconsin, just outside Minneapolis/St. Paul, to play the hometown Raiders before returning home to face Collins Academy from Chicago. The conference schedule starts in Week 3 with a trip to 64th and Dante to face Mt. Carmel in one of the Caravan’s first games in their new on-campus stadium. Montini then returns home to face St. Rita and St. Viator, with the latter game being the Broncos’ first-ever match-up against the Lions. Two games on the road, against Notre Dame (also a first-time match-up) and fellow LaSallian school St. Joseph round out the road portion of the schedule before two final home games against De La Salle and Providence round out the 2019 regular season schedule.
