In a game that came down to the final seconds, the Montini Broncos suffered their first loss of the season this past Friday night, falling to Mt. Carmel by a 27-20 score. Despite receiving the opening kickoff, the Broncos turned the ball over on the fifth play of the game when an errant snap bounced off the helmet of Deontay Bell and was recovered by the Caravan. Mt. Carmel would score on their ensuing possession as Justin Lynch connected with Kenenna Odeluga for a nine-yard touchdown. The game would remain 7-0 in favor of Mt. Carmel until midway through the second quarter, when Bell found Nick Wind for a 23-yard touchdown. The Caravan would respond immediately, as Lynch scored from five yards out to reclaim the lead.
Coming out of halftime, Mt. Carmel scored on the opening possession of the third quarter, as Lynch connected with Tony Livermore for a 19-yard touchdown. Montini responded immediately with a three play drive capped off by a 30-yard run from DiAndre Harris. Montini’s defense would hold the Caravan out of the end zone for the remainder of the game, only allowing two field goals by kicker Julian Patino. A two-yard run by Bell with just over a minute left cut the deficit to 27-20, and although Mt. Carmel recovered the ensuing onside kick, Montini’s defense forced a punt with eight seconds to play. Montini ran two more plays on offense but failed to advance the ball before the final horn sounded.
Despite the loss, Montini outgained Mt. Carmel, with 363 yards compared to 289 for the Caravan. Bell finished 8-for-21 passing for 132 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for another 151 yards and a score. Harris led all defensive players with 16 total tackles, while Patrick Peters and Trevor Swier each finished with nine.
In lower-level action, the freshman Broncos dropped a 41-22 decision to Mt. Carmel, while the JV Broncos lost 24-14 to the Caravan.
