Last week for the Broncos: Montini suffered its first loss of the 2019 campaign, dropping a 27-20 decision to Mt. Carmel. The Broncos outgained the Caravan in total yards and held Mt. Carmel out of the end zone from the middle of the third quarter on. Junior DiAndre Harris recorded sixteen total tackles on defense and added a 30-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter, while quarterback Deontay Bell rushed for 152 yards on 17 carries with a touchdown. Bell also completed 8 out of 21 passes for 132 yards and a score.

Scouting the Mustangs: St. Rita enters the game 1-2 on the season, with consecutive losses to Loyola and Richards following a Week 1 win over Joliet Catholic. The Mustangs’ offense centers around sophomore running back Kaleb Brown, one of the state’s most explosive runners. Junior quarterback Brian Johnson is a powerful thrower with a strong and aggressive receiving corps. Defensively, the Mustangs are an improved unit from last season, with their strength being their defensive backs. St. Rita recorded two pick-sixes against Joliet Catholic in Week 1, one each by Henry Wilson and Michael Gaughan. Their defensive line is also very physical and will pose a major challenge for Montini’s offense.

Lower-level outlook: The freshman Broncos will take on the Mustangs at 5 PM before the varsity game, while the JV Broncos will host St. Rita for a 6 PM kick-off on Monday.

Did you know? Despite missing the IHSA playoffs last season, the Mustangs still walked away with a championship trophy. St. Rita competed in the Prep Bowl playoffs following their nine game regular season, defeating Marmion, Hope Academy, and De La Salle before beating Taft 56-6 in the annual game between the winner of the Chicago Catholic League and the Chicago Public League.
