Last meeting: This is the first ever meeting between these two schools.
Last week for the Broncos: Trailing 35-17 midway through the third quarter against St. Rita, Montini scored 28 unanswered points to defeat the Mustangs 45-35. Quarterback Deontay Bell was the focal point of the Broncos’ offense, passing for 305 yards and 5 touchdowns while rushing for 203 yards and a score. His performance garnered him several awards, including the Daily Herald Player of the Week, the Suburban Life Player of the Week, and the Chicago Bears Player of the Week. Bell will be honored for at the Bears-Chiefs game on December 22nd.
Scouting the Lions: St. Viator is coming off a 28-21 overtime win against Marian Central, a game the Lions led in the second half before squandering the lead. St. Viator runs a balanced offensive attack and is averaging 33 points per game. Senior quarterback Jack Mahoney is the focal point of the offense and can run and throw with purpose, while junior Lucas Barisas will get the majority of carries on the ground. Defensively, the Lions primarily play a three-man front, allowing for an extra defensive back to stop the opponent’s passing game. They’ll try to slow down the Montini receivers, led by senior Nate Muersch, who caught eleven passes for 216 yards and two scores against St. Rita
Lower-level outlook: The freshman game originally scheduled for 5 PM Friday will now be played at 9:30 AM Saturday, while the JV Broncos will host the Lions at 5:30 PM on Monday.
Did you know? For several years, the Homecoming game was the only night game the Broncos played at home, as the lack of permanent lights caused all home games to be played on Saturday afternoons. For the Homecoming game each year, temporary lights were brought in to illuminate the field. It wasn’t until 2010 when permanent lights were installed at Duffy Memorial Stadium that Montini started playing home games on Friday nights.
