Last week for the Broncos: Montini rolled to a 42-0 victory over De La Salle, clinching playoff eligibility with the win. Quarterback Deontay Bell continued his stellar season by passing for 206 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 102 yards and two scores. The Bronco defense limited the Meteors to just 68 yards of total offense in the victory.
Scouting the Celtics: Providence enters this week following a close 31-30 win over St. Laurence in which the Celtics intercepted a two-point conversion attempt in the final seconds that would have given the Vikings the lead. Junior quarterback Kevin Conway and sophomore running back Aaron Vaughn are the focal points of the Celtics’ offense, with both players possessing good athleticism and speed. Conway’s favorite target is junior wideout Jameson Geers, who will also line up as a tight end. The Celtics possess a large and physical offensive line led by senior center Jake Renfro. Defensively, Providence is allowing an average of 16 points per game, with senior defensive tackle Elias Valdez being the focal point of their defensive line.
Lower-level outlook: The combined freshman/sophomore Broncos will take on the Celtics at 5:15 PM on Friday before the varsity game. Senior Night festivities will take place at halftime of the preliminary game.
Did you know? With last week’s victory, Montini qualified for the IHSA State Playoffs for the twenty-seventh consecutive year, one of the longest current playoff streaks in the state. Stevenson High School currently holds the longest streak, having qualified for the postseason each of the last thirty years.
