2019 Records: Montini 8-2, Sycamore 9-1
Last meeting: Montini won 21-17 in 2018
Last week for the Broncos: Montini rolled to a 56-6 opening round victory over Elmwood Park, with Devin Hoovel’s interception return for a touchdown on the first play setting the tone for the afternoon. The Broncos rolled up 413 total yards of offense to just 160 for the Tigers, with Deontay Bell completing five out of six passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns, both to Nate Muersch.
Scouting the Spartans: Sycamore defeated Evergreen Park 59-7 in their first round match-up last weekend. They operate a unique offense combining a power run game and a spread offense. Senior quarterback Grant McConkey is the focal point of their scheme, with a good arm and good speed. Manny Dominguez will get the majority of carries on the ground, with Kyle Antos and Nathaniel Altepeter also spending time in the backfield. Sycamore’s defense has posted five shutouts this season and held three other opponents to seven points or less, and the Spartans will look to slow down Montini’s high-powered offense.
Did you know? Montini’s opening-round victory last week makes this season the 25th in program history in which the Broncos have won at least one postseason game. Montini currently owns the second-longest active playoff streak in the state at 27 seasons, behind only Maine South, which made its 28th consecutive appearance this season.
